The 60s saw disruption become the norm but while many of the era’s fads eventually faded away, one iconic disrupter became immortal. Porsche produced the first 911 in 1965 through today. Looking at the evolutionary timeline of the 911, you can see that the car retains much of the original concept in terms of design.
Many people may not be aware of the fact that the original 911 was named 901. In the early 60s, French automobile manufacturer produced their 203 and 403 models. They sent a letter to Porsche claiming trademark over any car names with three digits and a zero in the middle. So instead of changing the name completely, Porsche simply replaced the 0 with a 1, giving birth to the iconic 911 we know of today. The 1963 model had 130 horsepower with precision steering and fantastic acceleration. The 911 became an instant sensation all around the world.
Seven generations and more than 20,000 racing victories later, Porsche built the beautiful one millionth 911 model in 2017. Porsche proudly claims that 70% of 911s produced are still on the road.
